The clarinet is the most recent addition to the woodwind family (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet) and was the last woodwind instrument to be integrated into the symphony orchestra. The clarinet in Eb is a sopranino clarinet and at 49 cm is a little shorter than the commonly used clarinet in Bb and as a result has a higher pitch.
